I’ve always passionately defended myself and my fellow football fans for a long time now. I feel that it is a pretty tough job to give your love and support to an institution with no guarantee of getting too much in return. Another reason why it’s tough being a football fan is because of the fact that it is a full time job. There is no respite for us even during the close season and how can there be? With big money moves happening all over the world as clubs try to do the best they can to ensure that the coming season is a successful one, the summer is turning out to be even hotter than usual.
And it seems like Manchester United have taken it upon themselves to take the temperature even higher. Their capture of Memphis Depay was a major coup while their much publicized courting of Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos continues to grab eyeballs. But the latest piece of news about the English giants has surely got to be the biggest of the lot. Reports from England have suggested that United have agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich vice-captain Bastian Schweinsteiger. It is also believed that the player has agreed to join United on a three year contract. He looks likely to receive around 7.2 million pounds in wages every year.
The 30 year old Germany captain is a football player of the highest order and his transfer to an English club would be a huge positive not just for the club themselves, but also for the Premier League as a whole. Not too often have we seen true superstars of the game move to England in the recent past. Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez were probably the last mammoth signings to join the Premier League while the vast majority of the truly astronomical deals have seen players leave for Spain.
For Manchester United though, this deal would be a major coup, and that is an understatement. It actually is pretty hard to imagine Shchweinsteiger ever play for any team other than Bayern Munich, so for United to be able to lure him away represents a mammoth achievement. The player’s familiarity with United boss Louis Van Gaal has certainly got to be the biggest factor behind his decision to leave Germany. The World Cup winner would bring in a wealth of experience, which is something that the 20 time Premier League winners need at the moment. The finer points of the deal still need to be sorted though as a transfer fee is yet to be agreed upon.
Scheweinsteiger has just 12 months on his current deal with the Bavarian behemoths so United are unwilling to pay the 15 million asking price that his current employers have set. At 30 years of age and with less than a year left on his current deal, 15 million would indeed be a tad too much no matter how experienced he is, but a compromise does look to be on the cards as Bayern Munich do not want to stand in the way of their long time servant while United are seriously interested in signing him up soon, so this deal may indeed be a matter of when and not if.
