The summer transfer window is yet to officially open but that does not mean that clubs are sitting idle. The fireworks have already begun and we have already seen a number of deals that have come off as real shocks. Liverpool are hogging a large part of the limelight right now thanks to their terrific start to the transfer window where they have already signed James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino. The last name on the already impressive list has surely got to be the biggest deal of the summer till now.
But, as Liverpool and Manchester United, who themselves have successfully pulled off a massive coup by signing Memphis Depay, continue to attract attention from the media and fans, there is one club who may just have pulled off a major, major deal without seeking too much attention for it.
The club that I am referring to is Arsenal, and the potential deal that I’m talking about concerns a certain Petr Cech. The goalkeeper looks all set to move from Chelsea to Arsenal after having seen his position as Chelsea number one being handed over to young hotshot Thibaut Courtois. The Czech Republic goalkeeper has built up a reputation as a legend at Stamford Bridge thanks to 11 years at the club. He was brought in by former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri who convinced Roman Abramovich to splash 7 million pounds for a virtually unknown goalkeeper who had made a name for himself with Rennes in Ligue 1.
Since then, it’s all been about moving onwards and upwards for the goalkeeper who became a household name across the world. Cech is arguably one of the best ‘keepers in the world and the stellar figures that he has racked up over the years only solidifies his position at the top. He has just short of 500 appearances for the Blues and an unbelievable tally of 15 major trophies with them.
Arsenal are set to seal the deal for Cech within another 24 hours with the player having reportedly already agreed personal terms with last season’s F.A. Cup winners. So, how exactly has Jose Mourinho, the man who processes things faster than a supercomputer, come to sanction a transfer of this footballing behemoth to one of their direct, and also crosstown, rivals? That has got to be the biggest mystery in the world of football since David Luiz’s transfer to PSG for an eye watering 50 million pounds.
Coming back to the matter at hand, this one deal could transform Arsenal from wannabe’s to winners. The Gunners are notorious for having trouble with ‘keepers since forever and this latest move should finally leave them all set for at least the next five years. For Chelsea though, this may turn out to be a move that they may end up regretting when their former hero saves a 91st minute penalty from Eden Hazard to give Arsenal an unassailable lead in the last lap of the title race.
