Manchester United’s close season activities this summer have been largely about transfers into the club after the 20 time English champions signed a total of four players. Memphis Depay, Mattia Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin have all made Old Trafford their new home ahead of another gruelling campaign of Premier League football.
In terms of players heading out of the club, Robin Van Persie and Nani were the two biggest names who had to make way. Both these stars joined Turkish outfit Fenerbahce for a combined fee of around 10 million pounds after being deemed surplus to requirements by boss Louis Van Gaal. Quite a few players also left the club over the close season but the most eye catching exit of them all may just be yet to come.
Argentine attacker Angel Di Maria is the player who is being linked with a big money deal away from Old Trafford. The former Real man was signed from Los Galacticos a year ago for a British record 59.7 million pounds. Di Maria though, was unable to live up to that exorbitant a fee as he endured a tough first campaign. After making a good first impression on English shores, his performances gradually deteriorated and he finally ended the season with a goal tally of just four. Di Maria is admittedly, not known for his goal scoring, but the four goals that managed last campaign was his lowest tally in the last six seasons. His assists record though was far more impressive as he broke into double digits but even then his debut season can be deemed as a flop.
In fact, the Argentine was so poor towards the end of the last season that he was ousted from the first team by the much maligned Ashley Young. Di Maria commanded a huge transfer fee and is commanding an equally huge wage and United have identified him as one man that they need to get off their books. Quite understandably, Ed Woodward and the other United bigwigs would like to part ways with him while they can still get some good money.
Luckily for them, French moneybags Paris Saint Germain have set their sights on Di Maria and if reports from England are to be believed, then United have accepted a bid of 45.9 million pounds for him. Ironically, United and PSG face off against each other just the coming week for a friendly game in the United States, and already talks are believed to be so advanced that the chances of Di Maria lining up against United seem to be pretty high.
Laurent Blanc’s PSG were hot on the heels of Di Maria ever since they became aware of his availability and let’s be honest here, not too many other teams would have been able to compete with them on this matter. Both the sides are already in the United States and with so many reports of a deal being agreed between the two parties, this deal does seem to be a question of when and not if.
