Chelsea have built up a reputation for being big spenders ever since the club were purchased by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. They have always been known for splashing the cash on some of the hottest talents around but this summer is proving to be nothing like the rest. Jose Mourinho has had a very quiet transfer window so far after having spent just 12 million pounds with more than half of the transfer window already behind us.
The Blues have signed Asmir Begovic from Stoke City for 8 million pounds for their biggest deal of the summer. Colombian forward Radamel Falcao was another major name to make his way into the club on a loan deal but a massive pay cut and an immense drop in form puts him just one step above the average Joe. Brazilian teenager, Nathan is the only other player the club has paid money for during the off season, but once again, he cannot be classified as a major deal.
With hardly another month left in the transfer window, Blues fans the world over have not had too much transfer activity to chat about. Yes, after the season that they had last time around, there wasn’t too much need for changes at the club. Mourinho himself has not given too many hints about his club going forward and buying too many new players. However, that does not mean that Chelsea will stay quiet for whatever remains of the window. The Blues are definitely in the market for one particular player, one talented individual who they feel, offers them the answer to a rather difficult question.
That player is of course John Stones, and the question that he answers pertains to Blues legend, John Terry. Everton defender Stones has been labelled as one of the hottest prospects in English football after breaking through the ranks at Goodison Park. The young Englishman has two seasons of top-flight football under his belt, but already he has made such a name for himself that many people in the UK are actually labelling him as a future England star.
Mourinho has identified the young man as the one to replace John Terry once the Chelsea skipper hangs up his boots. At 21 years of age, Stones would definitely be a buy for the future, but his prowess may very well mark him out as an important player even for the present day. Chelsea have already made two approaches for the player, both of which have been bluntly turned down.
The Everton management are not at all interested in losing their star player so soon, but the truth is that everyone has a price, and John Stone’s is around 35 million pounds. Both Abramovich and Mourinho have realized that this figure for a 21-year-old with so much potential would be a bargain in the long run, but this fact is also well known by Roberto Martinez himself who has already dug in his heels. With just about another month left in the transfer window, the John Stones issue will definitely be a space that needs to be closely watched and we may just be in for another dramatic transfer saga.
